About Rockland County, New YorkRockland County, NY is located 15 miles northwest of Manhattan and was a semi-rural area until the 1950s when infrastructure such as the Palisades Parkway and Tappan Zee Bridge were built and the idea of suburbia transformed the county. The Rockland County Volunteer Fire Services Museum depicts 200 years of fire service history including a horse-drawn steamer, hand drawn hose cart and several antique fire trucks. The museum is also home to a large collection of fire related memorabilia dating back to 1834 when Orangetown Fire Company #1 was the first organized firehouse in the country. The Holocaust Museum & Study Center is a permanent exhibit that combines graphics, montages, artifacts and audio visual displays to detail every facet of the Holocaust. They also host changing art exhibits.
Among the over 45 art institutions in Rockland County, lives the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre. They offer classes, camps and productions for area youngsters from ages 7-22. Art Angels is a community organization that supports the arts in the public school system. They are the liaison between ArtWorks, DramaWorks and MusicWorks.
During the last 41 years, the Rockland County Park System has grown from one park of 3 acres to a network of 28 parks that comprise 3,100 acres. The parks not only offer active and passive recreation for visitors but, provide nature trails where visitors may see animals such as a red-tailed hawk, pileated woodpecker, barred owl, red fox or a wild turkey. Scenic points are found throughout the trails. Additionally, two county parks offer residents an enclosed area for their dogs to run off leash, gather and socialize. Dogs must bring their humans along for supervision.
